IMG_7993During a visit to Amity High School Tuesday afternoon, I got an early look at a few of the fall sports teams.

Boys cross country was finishing up a run on the streets of Woodbridge, Varsity field hockey was practicing as were the Freshman and Varsity Football teams. The girls Varsity soccer team was playing a scrimmage game against Trumbull and a few Tennis players (out of season) were practicing on the courts.

Boys soccer was away playing scrimmage against Trumbull.

Other Fall Sports include: Girls Cross Country, Girls Swimming and Girls Volleyball.

Since the field hockey team was only practicing shooting, it was hard to really gauge how they look for the season. The goalie, though, did have some moves and girls soccer team seemed to be playing well too.

Boys Soccer: SCC Quarterfinal Championship — Double OT, Penalty Kicks, Unbelievable Game

Just how Amity and Shelton could keep up the momentum with the whipping wind and cold temperature during the energy charged SCC Quarterfinal Championship game in Woodbridge on Saturday, Oct. 26, is beyond me.

Both boys soccer teams played hard, using every move they knew for two hours as fans huddled under blankets on the hillside cheering for their teams to “Shoot it!”

In the first half, Captain Justyn Broderick (4) put the Spartans on the board at 22:29. Shelton’s Matt Stoll, assisted by Elias Uyar evened the score at 8:48.

Broderick came on strong in the second half with his second goal, assisted by Matt Whitehill (9) at 51:10. Matt Brouillette scored for the Gaels at 44:52.

The game went into overtime at 2-2, and after a scoreless 10 minutes, it went into double overtime, again, no change, but not for lack of effort on both sides.

Amity and Shelton lined up on the field for the Penalty Kick phase, sending their best players up to the net to try and get the ball past the opposing team’s waiting goalkeeper.

Dean Schwartz, Nick O’Brien Cannon, and Aaron Cooper all made their kicks past Shelton’s Chris Carew. Amity’s Griffin Volta didn’t have to work too hard as the PKs from Shelton flew over the net. HERE is VIDEO of that winning moment!

The final score was Amity 2, Shelton 2 (Amity won with 3-0 in Penalty Kicks)

The Amity Spartans #2 in this division, advanced past the Shelton Gaels, ranked #7.

In this game, Shelton outshot Amity 19-15.

Volta made 15 saves for the Spartans; Carew made 10 saves for the Gaels.

Records: Amity 11-2-4; Shelton 9-5-3

Ian O’Brien-Cannon’s header into the net off Jeremy Conn’s corner kick with 8 minutes, 42 seconds gone in the match was the first, last, and only goal of the game last Wednesday as the Amity boys’ soccer team blanked Sheehan 1-0. The Southern Connecticut Conference – Housatonic Division contest was played in Woodbridge. The Spartans outshot Sheehan 16-11 and goalie Griffin Volta recorded nine saves.

“I thought we played really well,” Coach Mike Marchitto said. “This was one of the better games we have played this season. We came out strong and gave a good effort. I would have liked to see us score a couple more goals, but I’ll take the good effort and the win.”

The loss dropped the Titans’ record to 4-2-1 (1-1-2 against Housy opponents).

Joe Guerra had a career game on Friday as he blasted home 5 goals and added a pair of assists in the Spartans 7-2 romp past Jonathan Law (which is coached by ex-Amity mentor Italo Mongillo). Guerra opened up his assault ion the Golden Eagles net with an unassisted left-footed boot with only 2:05 gone in the match. Law briefly tied the match at 1-1 when Ryan Dennis beat Volta at 23:57. That deadlock was short-lived as Guerra set up Ricky Mayer’s score at 24:58 and then added another unassisted goal at 27:27 to make it 3-1. Jeremy Conn found the net (with help from Guerra) at 31:23 and Guerra added yet another unassisted score at 39:34. With his three goals in the first half, Guerra earned a natural hat trick.  Leading 5-1 at the break, Guerra added two more scores at 42:15 and 71:50. Lawman Craig Calderone recorded Law’s other goal at 75:00.

According to Marchitto, “We really played well in the Law game, but we do need to be more focused mentally. Giving up two goals is unacceptable.”

He added, “Joey is a talented player who has all the tools. At times, he’s able to put it all together but at other times, for some reason, he just shuts off.  My job as the coach, is to make sure he is always turned on. He strikes the ball nicely and knows how to put it into the net. We’ve been working with him to use his left foot more and make himself a more complete player.”

Amity outshot the Eagles 26-9 and improved its record to 7-1.

The Black and Gold return to action on Tuesday to host East Haven at 3:45 p,m.
