For many years, the Southern Connecticut Conference swimming scene was Cheshire sitting alone on top of the pack with Branford, Amity, and sometimes Hand unsuccessfully nipping at the Rams’ heel and the rest of the pack battling it out at the third level. All that changed last year when Glastonbury snapped Cheshire’s 24 year-286 consecutive meet winning streak, proving that the Rams were beatable.

Heading into Thursday night’s SCC show down with Branford, the undefeated Lady Spartans (9-0) had already defeated Hand and will face-off with Cheshire next week.  They improved their spotless slate by defeating the Hornets 91-82 at the Orange Community Center Pool.

By winning five of the meet’s first six events, Amity took an early lead and never looked back.  Anna Lu was a twin winner, copping both the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 57.93 seconds) and the 500 free (5:13.63). The same is true for Dana Grindall as she won both the 200 individual medley (2:10.81) and the 100 butterfly (56.88)  Amanda Craig not only won the diving competition but did it with a new school record score of 241.95, erasing the previous record she had set earlier in the season. Branford (now 8-2) also had a twin winner as Christine Rasile won both the 50 free (24.99) and the 100 free (54.44).

The meet began with Madeline Snow, Natalie Ambrosey, Grindall, and Dana Chung winning the 200 medley relay in 1:54.01. After Chung, Snow, Lu, and Grindall splashed to a first place 1:41.70 in the 200 free relay, Snow added a winning time of 1:04.01 in the 100 backstroke.

Amity now looks ahead to hosting Cheshire Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Orange Community Center Pool. The winner of this show down will be the SCC regular season champs. It will also Senior Night as it is the Lady Spartans’ final home meet of the season.
