The Amity Spartans Boys Ice Hockey team hosted the Branford Hornets in West Haven on Saturday, Jan. 13.
Branford (5-1-1) lost its first game of the season 4-2 to Guilford on Friday, and came out with one mission — to win! They didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard. At 12:33, Blake Kustra made a goal, assisted by Max Bunton and Spencer Engstom.
The Hornets dominated the second period in spite of the Spartan’s best efforts. Jack Manware made a goal assisted by Bunton at 5:25. At 6:09 Kustra made his second goal, assisted by Robbie Lionetti and Bunton. Less than 2 minutes later, Manware made his second goal, assisted by Kustra at 7:58. Amity switched out goalie Michael Holloway for Tyler Cole. SCORE: 4-0 Branford
While the Zamboni smoothed the ice, Amity Coach Michael Richetelli had a chat with his team to come up with some sort of strategy. The Spartans came out with the fire in their hearts that we’ve come to love this season. In the first 30 seconds, Jason Csejka scored the first goal for Amity, assisted by Ryan Miller and Jamie Blum. Three minutes later Jake Silliman made an unassisted goal, but that was as good as it got. Tyler Cole was able to keep Branford at bay so they didn’t widen the spread any further. FINAL SCORE: 4-2 Branford.
From the Coach
Richetelli said his team played with some intensity in the third period that they should have played with in the first two. “We played a good first period, but they didn’t play with intensity. That’s a lesson we learned today,” he said. “You learn and you move on.”
Of Branford, he said, “We knew they were a good team and it was going to be a tough game. They (Branford) came off a tough loss yesterday and so, they came back today.”
“You can’t expect to win, you have to play hard to make that happen,” Richetelli said. “They dominated the second period, and we should have played harder then.”
Next up for Amity, is an away game vs Hamden on Wednesday, Jan. 17. This is the first time the Spartans have played the Green Dragons (4-2) in quite some time.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Spartans will host NFI [New Fairfield/Immaculate] (4-1-1) in West Haven at 3 p.m.
