Amity’s Cody White slaps in his first of three goals in the first period.

The Amity Spartans Boys Ice Hockey team has had a stellar season so far, but we know that as time goes on, there will be a team that will keep them from having a successful outcome, but Wednesday, Jan. 2 was not that day.

Amity hosted Newtown in West Haven and fought as hard as ever for another win.

Just shy of six minutes into the game the Nighthawks’ Jeremy Larkin scored the first goal, assisted by David Brestovansky.

Well, that just wouldn’t do for the Spartans, and eight seconds after Newtown’s celebration broke up, Amity’s Cody White slipped one into the net, tying the game.

Mike Richetelli’s boys showed their true spirit, shooting one after another at Newtown’s goalie Matthias Paltauf and within 2:49 of his first goal, White scored again, assisted by Ken Page and Jason Csejka. But he wasn’t done yet. With just 1:58 remaining in the period, White got a hat trick, with the assistance of Michael Lebreck and Page.

First Period Score: Amity 3-1

Both teams returned to the ice for the second period and it took a while, with a lot of back and forth, then Csejka made a goal for Amity, assisted by Nelson Bordeleau.

Four minutes later, the Nighthawks’ Brestovansky scored on an assist from Andrew Gardener.

Second Period Score: Amity 4-2

Amity wasted no time going into the final period. Connor Bath had the crowd screaming as he shot one into the net just 10 seconds in, assisted by Nick Kiwanis.

More than ten minutes passed before Dylan Gherlone scored, assisted by Page and Lebreck.

It looked like a clean win for the Spartans when Newtown’s James Celentano got one past Amity’s freshman goalie Michael Andreeson with only 40.2 seconds remaining. He was assisted by Aiden Bepko.

The Spartans celebrated their fifth consecutive victory, by defeating Newtown 6-3.

Next Up: Amity is on the road at the Northford Ice Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 5 for a game against North Haven (1-1-4) at 8:30 p.m.

Coach Quotes: Head Coach Mike Richetelli took a moment to share his thoughts about the game.

“We wanted to give freshman goalie Michael Andreessen an opportunity to show what he can do, and he had his first win.”

“Cody White had a hat trick tonight in the first period. He had a very good game. Dylan Gherlone got his first career goal on a power play right at the end.”

“We worked hard, we won each period, and that was the goal. We got a little chippy and although tempers are a part of the game, we have to stay out of the penalty box. That’s another goal to stay out of the penalty box and keep moving forward.”

“We had a lot of firsts. Everyone got their feet wet tonight, everyone got in and we had a great result, but there’s always still plenty to work on.”

With the regular season drawing to a close, it is imperative that the boys’ hockey team and every team performs their best on the road to the SCC Championship games and then, hopefully to the state competitions.

From the very first scrimmage, Orange Live expressed its belief in the Amity Spartans Hockey Team and after an “okay” season they are finding their stride — and just in time.

With their Valentine’s Day win over North Branford, the Spartans qualified for the upcoming tournament.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Spartans (9-6) were on the road in Danbury for a matchup against Newtown (7-10) and they continued to show their excellent skill on the ice.

As you can see, the game was 100 percent Amity.

First Period

Colin Hughes slapped one in unassisted, at 1:25 and put Amity on the scoreboard.

Second Period

The second period was huge for the Spartans just 4:34 after returning to the ice, Jordan Conn made a goal, assisted by Michael Miller.

Just three minutes later, Nelson Bordeleau scored on an assist from Adam Moscato. After that, the scoring was fast and furious. Joey Schittina made an unassisted goal within 35 seconds of the last one, and 50 seconds later Brian Early made an unassisted goal of his own and two minutes later it was Conn’s turn again, assisted by Early.

Third Period

Conn made his third (hat trick) goal on an assist from Jamie Blum. Then two minutes later Michael Decesare scored on assists from Justin Miller and Jake Silliman.

The Spartans win 8-0!
