On Friday night, Amity (1-5) took on Wilbur Cross (4-1) in Woodbridge.

After a very strong game — and near win [27-28] — last week in Branford, Amity hit the field with confidence, in spite of the odds.

In the first quarter, Amity was ahead 6-0, then in the second quarter with 5:07 left on the clock, another goal and 2 point conversion to bring their lead to 14-0.

After the Amity Dance Team gave a spirited halftime show, the Spartans came out onto the field with the same winning attitude that carried them through the first half.

In the third quarter, just as it appeared that the Governors were going to get onto the scoreboard, Amity Junior Matt Weidenfeller (4) intercepted a pass near the goal line and ran 99 yards to make a touchdown for the Spartans. Jordan Conn’s (27) kick was good and the Spartans had a solid 21-0 lead over the Governors.

Soon after, Amity Junior Luke Smith (10) crossed the goal line, but there was a flag on the play for holding, and the TD did not count.

When it seemed like Amity would enjoy a shut out, Kwane Taylor (1) made a move along the sideline and scored for Wilbur Cross with 6:44 remaining in the game. A 2 point conversion narrowed the margin but the Governors couldn’t do any better than that and the Amity Spartans won its second game of the season 21-8.

Records: Amity 2-5; Wilbur Cross 4-2

Here’s a shout out to all the fans from both sides who braved the cold to watch this game. Your support means a lot.

Next week, Amity is home again, this time against the evenly matched Hamden (2-5) High School

IMG_0578The Amity Spartans football team is getting better with every game and Saturday’s home non-conference loss to the Wilbur Cross  Governors was a nail-biter.

First Quarter

The Governors started things off in a big way with two consecutive touchdowns and extra points with just 2:27 remaining in the first quarter.  16-0

Second Quarter

The Spartans got onto the scoreboard at 9:20 in second quarter with a touchdown and the kick was good.

Still Wilbur Cross wanted to show them who was boss, and the Governor’s scored again with just 3:58 remaining in the quarter, but they failed to make the extra point.

The big blow came as the clock ran out on the first half — as the Governors made another touchdown with :00 left to go, bringing the halftime score to 28-7.

Third Quarter

Call them the comeback kids, the Spartans made their second touchdown at 7:29 and the kick was good in the third quarter.

They followed that up with another touchdown with 3:54 remaining in the quarter, closing the deficit to 28-20.

Fourth Quarter

At 9:01 the Spartans made a touchdown, closing the deficit to 28-26 in 4th quarter

The final quarter had so much back and forth with each team getting possession of the ball, often giving false hope as they drew closer to the goal lines.

The last 6 seconds provided the perfect nail-biting opportunity as the Spartans opted for a two point conversion play to tie up the game, unfortunately that didn’t pan out.

Wilbur Cross won by two points — 28-26.

On Friday, Oct. 16 Amity (0-4-0)  is on the road at Fairfield Prep at 6 p.m.

— From Terri Miles

My deepest apologies to the Amity Spartans Football Team for not getting anything up after your  amazing 41-14 home game victory against Wilbur Cross  last Friday.

Sports writer Nick Mirto was under the weather and missed his first game of the season, and I couldn’t get the stats in order to blunder my way through a story.

I was there for the entire game, frozen toes and all and took photos as always.

I do believe that tonight’s game at Fairfield Prep Begins at 6 p.m. I know they are tough, but you guys are awesome. Go Get ‘Em!
