Gideon Emmanuel of St. Martin de Porres Academy started the “Bike Mechanics Club” to enable inner city middle school students the opportunity to get their own bike. The Academy partnered with John Martin and Paul Hammer, co-founders of Bicycle Education Entrepreneurship and Enrichment Programs (BEEEP). BEEEP recycles bikes, teaches repair and riding skills, and provides bikes for those who don’t have bikes and whose bikes need repair.
Every Monday afternoon this past fall six Academy students went to BEEEP’s garage to learn how to build, repair, maintain and ride their bikes safely.
The Rotary Club of Orange and the Rotary-sponsored St. Martin de Porres Academy Interact Club provided the funding to purchase the required safety equipment for the students. On Friday, March 18th, the students were presented with their safety equipment at the Orange Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon at Racebrook Country Club.
