There’s a new face at the Zoo!
Meet Berry, a 10-year-old Red panda who came to us from Trevor Zoo in Millbrook, NY to be a companion for Rochan.
Rochan and Berry are still getting to know each other, so, for now, you may see Berry in the indoor habitat, while Rochan will have access to the outdoor habitat. Welcome, Berry!

Rochan Needs A New Habitat

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-2-12-00-amNearly a year ago, the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport welcomed an adorable Red Panda named Rochan, who quickly became a visitor favorite.

By mid-summer, the zoo announced that the little guy was here to stay, but he would need a more suitable habitat.

This month, while everything is a little slow, the zoo is working on raising enough money to construct Rochan’s new home.

From his dreams of tree-top sunbathing to a 24/7 bamboo buffet, Rochan deserves only the best. In order to help build his posh pad, the zoo needs your help!  Your donation today will help them turn $75,000 into $150,000. Every dollar you donate will be matched 1:1 by the Werth Family Foundation Challenge Grant.

Remember, the Beardsley Zoo vas the victim of state funding cuts several years ago, and depends upon public fundraising to continue running. It is Connecticut’s only zoo, and we are fortunate to have it located so close to Orange.

Opinion: It’s Happening At the Zoo! The Penguins Are Coming!

e0cd3101-5e1f-4aa5-8c40-c2a9e0319252During a recent visit to the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport — Connecticut’s only zoo — I caught up with Zoo Director Gregg Dancho about anything new happening there this year.
He said the Red Panda that is on loan proved to be very popular — and really cute. The Giant Anteater had a baby that will be introduced to the public in May and he was working on bringing in some penguins for the summer months.
Well, if you haven’t visited the zoo in a while, mark your calendars and get ready to meet Squirt, Sal, South and Tubbs — four African Black-Footed Penguins that are spending their summer at the Zoo from May 7 through Sept. 30.
A temporary exhibit is being built across from the Peacock Cafe featuring 3,000 gallons of water where you can watch them swim when they’re not walking around on land.
The penguins, which range in age from 12 to 23, are coming to Connecticut from the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The species is one of 10 featured in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ new initiative entitled “SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction.”
Beardsley’s Education Department is planning Wild Adventure Animal Shows, Animal Bytes storytelling and scavenger hunts — all designed to help you learn, and care, about penguins.
The Beardsley Zoo is located just a hop skip and a jump away from Orange at 1875 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $15 — 12 and older; $12 — ages 3-11; $11 — 62 and older; Under 3 years admitted free.
Consider buying a Family Membership and it will pay for itself in no time — and you won’t miss any of the great special events the zoo offers throughout the year.
