Amity vs West Haven

Mya Manzione was
the WELI player of the game on Friday vs West Haven.

This past Friday evening the Lady Spartans traveled to West Haven High School to take on a gritty Blue Devils team in their refurbished gymnasium. Playing before an audience of socially distant parents, the team fed of the collective energy and got off to a fast start. In a very physical first quarter, the Spartans got buckets from Mya Manzione and Skylar Burzynski early and then a three-pointer near the end of quarter one by Jayne Whitman to take a 9-1 lead. The second quarter saw Amity pick up the defensive pressure again with Meghan Smith and Sarah Granados forcing turnovers that the Spartans converted into scores. A late second-quarter three-pointer by Granados helped the Spartans to a 21-6 lead.

To be expected, West Haven came out fighting in Q3 regaining some momentum, but big buckets by Becky Marchitto, Manzione, and another three-pointer by Whitman helped the Spartans take a 33-23 lead into the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils kept applying the pressure down the stretch, but the Amity defense did enough along with 4 free throws by Smith in the final minute to secure the victory in this key matchup 39-36. Manzione led the scoring with 11 points, Granados and Whitman chipped in 9 and 8 respectively. Burzynski with 5, Smith with 4, and Marchitto with 2 rounded out the scoring.
