DSC00345Last Saturday, hundreds of volunteers gathered together to help fill Thanksgiving food baskets for area families in need.

You never know when you may suddenly find yourself having to go to the local food bank. Personal situations can change in the blink of an eye, and it’s not easy seeking help for the first time.

For those who need it, there are many organizations and neighbors who are willing to donate food and their time to help bring some normalcy to your lives again.

Saturday’s event was the Basket Brigade, a wonderful organization that Orange resident Glenn Ketchian brought to my attention several years ago, and I’ve stuck with them since.

The ridiculously well-organized event shows that practice makes perfect. Over the years, organizers have made slight modifications to the assembly line and in about 30 minutes the men, women, teens and children who volunteered for the basket brigade had completed the task of filling more than 152 baskets of food so families who REALLY need it will have a full Thanksgiving meal, including rolls and pie, juice, toys for the children and a handmade Thanksgiving card on the holiday.

I was so happy to see many familiar faces in the crowd this year, and to see people stay behind after 90 minutes of non-stop work — who were ready and willing to spend another hour or two driving around unfamiliar neighborhoods delivering the baskets to the very grateful families.

No matter what amount of volunteer work you did that day, I hope you walked away with a warm feeling inside for all the good you did.

In 2014, I will be sure to give advance notice of the Basket Brigade details so you will be able to plan ahead.

Thank you all for your generosity and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families, and to everyone you helped.
