The team finished the regular season above 500 with a record of 7-5 and now heads to a modified SCC tournament where they are the number 6 seed in Division 1 and will travel to take on the number 3 seed Wilbur Cross this Friday.

In game one the Spartans lost a physically tough back-and-forth game on the home court of North Haven. Amity was seeking to avenge an early-season two-point loss at home versus the Indians.

The team was down early 13-8 but came back with a great defensive effort combined with some deft shot-making to take a 23-20 lead at the half. The home team came out hot in the third quarter to reclaim the lead by seven points heading into the final quarter.

Amity vs Shelton

In a tightly played first half, which saw the Spartans up 10-7 after one quarter that was a five-points at one point, Shelton’s size in the paint started to create problems for

Amity with many second-chance opportunities that resulted in a basket in the closing seconds to take a 17-16 lead at the intermission. It was a struggle to score for both teams in the third quarter, with Shelton getting some shots to drop towards the end of the quarter taking a 25-20 lead going to the final period.

The Spartans were able to get within six points in the fourth quarter but could not overcome the deficit and came up short, losing 38-27. Jayne Whitman 11 points and Sarah Granados 8 points both canned 2 three-point shots and led the Spartans offensively. Senior guard Meghan Smith added 5 points that included three-point field goal and 2 points from Becky Marchitto and a free throw from Meredyth Laskowski to round out the scoring.

Girls Basketball: Tara Laugeni Makes History, Leads Team to Victory on Senior Night

The Lady Spartans Basketball team hosted the Career Panthers on Monday, Feb. 11, at Amity High School.

This was a special evening for two of the players, Tara Laugeni, and Haley Esparo, the only seniors on the team. Fans kept their attention on #34 – Laugeni, counting each time she made a basket waiting for that one point when she would hit that magical number 1,000 and join the other four female players in Amity history to accomplish this landmark.

Laugeni made two 2-point shots in the first quarter and, with the second shot came her big moment. Her teammates, parents, family members, coach, and friends charged onto the court and put the game on hold for about three minutes while everyone took photos and congratulated her.

In total, Laugeni scored 20 points in this game, followed by Jill Martin, with 19.

Esparo made 5 points, and Skylar Burzynski, Cat Thomas and Meaghan Smith each added 4.

The Lady Spartans declawed the Panthers in this game, the closest that Career came in the point spread was 3 points behind at the end of the first quarter at 17-14.

The halftime score was 34-16, Amity.

Third quarter, in which many of Amity’s younger players took the court, ended at 50-18.

Everyone got to play in the fourth quarter and the Lady Spartans won this senior night game 60-24.

I must commend the Panthers for demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout this game. Their #3 was always there to extend a hand and help someone up off the floor no matter what team she was from. That was refreshing.

NEXT UP: The girls defeated Guilford 39-34 at Amity on Thursday and now it’s on to the SCC Girls Basketball Quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Sheehan HS, #2 Hamden vs. #7 Amity Regional, 2:30 p.m.
