IMG_0891The #1 seeded Amity Spartans Baseball team played a nearly flawless game at Whitey Piurek Field (West Haven High School) today and set a new record high score for an SCC Championship Game with a 17-0 victory over #3 seeded Notre Dame of West Haven. (The previous high, made twice by Amity, once by Cheshire, was 14).

Two very important elements to the Spartans’ championship win were the Hague brothers, second-baseman Andy (#1) and Teddy (#7), the winning pitcher.

Teddy’s pitching was absolutely incredible, as he kept every batter for the Green Knights guessing. He only allowed one hit.

With Andy first in the batting lineup, the Spartans were off to a good start when he opened the game with a single. The next two batters also hit singles, then Brian Ronai’s hit resulted in two RBIs.

Also in the first inning Max Scheps, Adam Hurwitz, Colin Beaulieu and Andy Hague each scored, giving Amity a very comfortable 6-0 lead.

The second inning showed no change, then the third inning with two walks, four hits and Jack Nolan’s two-run double pushed Amity up to an even more impressive 12-0 lead.

This game even included a surprise appearance in the batting lineup by Amity first baseman Chris Winkel, a senior who’s been sidelined by a hand injury that occurred during the Baseketball season.

It was nice seeing him play first base again, although Nolan has been doing a good job there in his absence. Yet we were surprised to see him step up to the plate.  True to form, Winkel hit a single in the fifth inning.

When it looked like the Green Knights would not be able to catch up, Amity fans got to see what five of the pinch hitters could do in the sixth inning. Alec Smith, Sebastian Formica and Rohan Patel drove in runs and each scored. Rounding out the five, Matthew Sabitsky and Michael Dietch also made hits, but never had the opportunity to cross home plate.

Senior Michael Stewart (#10) also had a chance to pitch in the sixth.

At 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, Amity will play in the Class LL first round game in Woodbridge against the winner of the Farmington/Stamford game.

Amity is gearing up for an opportunity to win its fourth consecutive State Championship Title.
