Boys’ Hockey: Spartans Battle Stamford To The Last Second

The Amity Spartans Boys’ Ice Hockey team hosted Stamford-Westhill at the Bennett Rink in West Haven on Saturday night.

Following an awe inspiring 7-1 season opener vs Milford, the fans were pumped for more of the same, and the Spartans did not disappoint.

First Period

Stamford came on strong. In a stunning move, just 40 seconds into the game, Anthony Corelli shot one in, assisted by Jake Frattaroli and Thomas Waterbury.

It took quite a while, but Amity made up for lost time eight minutes of play time later Cam Delvecchio put the Spartans on the scoreboard assisted by Michael Page.

Then at 10:17 Page pulled the Spartans ahead 2-1, assisted by Matt Wezenski

Second Period

Once again, Stamford struck first with a game tying goal with Owen Van Dusen scoring an unassisted goal at 2:44.

Amity’s AJ Capecelatro broke that tie at 10:32, assisted by Connor Bunnell.

But with 12 seconds remaining in the period, Stamford’s James Levdon assisted by Tanner Ball, tied things up at 3-3.

Third Period

This time, the Spartans struck first, with Dean Gattinella breaking the tie assisted by Wezenski. (4-3)

Both teams battled through the final period, goalies diving to block and deflect, and Amity held the lead until 12:42, when Stamford’s John Ferris assist by Ian Duggan tied the game at 4.

Play after play it looked like the game would go into overtime. Fans watched the action on the ice and the scoreboard as the clocked ticked down. Then it happened. With one second left on the clock, Waterbury came out of nowhere to knock one in and won the game for Stamford.

Final Score: Stamford 5, Amity 4.

On Wednesday, Dec. 21, the Spartans (1-1) will host the East Haven Coop (1-1) at the Bennett Rink in West Haven at 6 p.m. Come and cheer them on.
