DEEP: Orange Resident Dies In Kayaking Accident In Guilford

On Sunday, May 22, emergency crews responded to Lake Quonnipaug in Guilford after getting a report of a missing kayaker.

According to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Energy and Protection (DEEP), 33-year-old Rodrigo Tocto of Orange was kayaking on the lake.

The kayak capsized when Tocto apparently lost his paddle and stood up to grab it.

Captain Keith Williams from DEEP EnCon Police said he was not wearing a life jacket.

“From what we understand from family members, he was not a strong a swimmer,” Williams said.

Search crews eventually found him and Branford firefighters performed CPR and attempted life-saving efforts.

Tocto was then transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where authorities said he later died.

Orange Live sends its condolences to the Tocto family.
