Heat Safety Advise For Pets

Every year across the country children and pets die in hot cars.

If you LOVE your dog or your kids, please do not take them out in the car on a hot day, especially if you are going to stop somewhere “for just a minute.”

See the chart for how fast the inside of a car can heat up to a dangerous level for your loved ones. If you don’t believe it, then sit in your car with the doors and windows closed, or treat yourself to a slightly opened window and see for yourself how comfortable you are after 5-10-15 minutes or a half hour. You won’t leave your dog (or kids) in a locked car alone again.

Hot Pavement Can Burn Paw Pads

WFSB 3 ran a heat chart I had never seen before.  I took my dog for an early morning walk as the sun was rising, so she wouldn’t burn her paws on the streets or pavement.

So many people don’t think about the adverse effects of a hot surface when they take their dog for his or her daily walk.

If the thermometer reads 95, the temperature on shaded grass would be 90.

Grass in an unsheltered area — 105.

Concrete (sidewalks) — 125.

Asphalt (streets) — 140.

At 140 degrees, your pet’s paws can burn in just ONE MINUTE.

If you have any doubts about the surface heat, put your hand (or bare foot) on the surface for 10 seconds and try it yourself. Please don’t put your dog through that kind of pain. If their paws are burned, consult your veterinarian immediately.
