Ban This Book Club: Oryx and Crake
Monday, October 7 at 7 p.m.
Join librarian Rebecca Harlow as we discuss Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood as a work of literature and an object of censorship. This book has been banned or challenged in 6 states. In August 2024, it was one of 13 books banned statewide by Utah’s state board of education, allegedly for its “objective sensitive material. It was included in a BBC list of the 100 Most Inspiring Novels and The Guardian’s list of 100 Best Novels of the 21st century. A novel of the future, Oryx & Crake “explores a world that has been devastated by ecological and scientific disasters.”

Connected Cooking: Pumpkin Bread
Kit pickup October 12 to October 19!
Celebrate the heritage of Native Americans with this tasty take-home food kit. Make your

own pumpkin bread with a recipe from Chef Freddie Bitsoie’s cookbook New Native Kitchen: Celebrating Modern Recipes of the American Indian.
This kit includes a recipe and most ingredients needed to make one loaf of pumpkin bread as well as a companion recipe for pumpkin bread pudding. Participants must supply cooking spray or butter, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, a whisk, and a loaf pan.
Please limit your registration to one kit per household.

Wednesday Book Group: Dreaming in Cuban
Wednesday, October 16 at 1 p.m.

Of Cristina García’s Dreaming in Cuban, Time Magazine wrote, “Her story is about three generations of Cuban women and their separate responses to the revolution. Her special feat is to tell it in a style as warm and gentle as the ‘sustaining aromas of vanilla and almond,’ as rhythmic as the music of Beny Moré.” Copies of this National Book Award finalist are available to borrow at the Circulation Desk.

Craft Workshop: Batik
Monday, October 21, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Learn how to use traditional tjanting tools to draw with hot wax onto cotton fabric then use dyes to paint your design. Workshop guided by Librarian Rebecca Harlow.
