Here It Is, Carnival Day: Everything You Need To Know

carnival 2015The Orange Volunteer Fire Department has been working on the 2015 carnival since the day after the 2014 carnival ended.

Parking and admission are always free.

It takes a lot of planning to keep such a big operation rolling every year, keeping the public interested in coming and finding volunteer non-firefighters  willing to help in the food tent and pitch in at various games around the fairgrounds.

Denise Mirto sent a shout-out for food tent volunteers more than a month ago and has been successful, but she can still use a few extra hands on Saturday day and night and Sunday.

Under the Raffle Tent you will find many familiar faces, selectmen, various committee and board members and residents who come back year after year and donate their time to the fire department, just as the firefighters donate their time to the town every hour of every day.

Several years ago, First Selectman Jim Zeoli called the Carnival the “cheapest fire insurance that an Orange Resident can have.”

“If every household spent a couple hundred bucks at the carnival, it is the cheapest insurance they can have for fire service,” Zeoli said. “If we had a paid Fire Department it would cost us millions of dollars every year.”

Did you know?

There are many rides, games, and food options at the carnival, and everyone has their favorite, but did you know that the Fire Department only benefits from the proceeds at the games and food that they run?

The games are the Frog Bog, Dunk Tank, High Striker, Speedball and Blower ball – the little game of chance next to the raffle tent. The 50/50 raffle benefits both the civilian winner and the fire department, who split the pot a couple of times a day.

The main food tent (under the pavilion) and the satellite food tent straight up the aisle next to the fence on Orange Center Road also are Fire Department run.

Of course, you can’t beat $5 for a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of 10 great prizes, including a $5,000, $4,000, or $2,000 Visa Gift Card, $1,200 Gift Certificate from Diamond Designs, Apple iPad WiFi 16 GB from Best Buy, or one of the gift cards from Chip’s, Trader Joes, Knights Inc or Ben’s Service Center. And finally, there’s the Tickets to New Haven Open at Yale Tennis Tournament.

Buy Your Raffle Tickets!

For as far back as longtime residents can remember, the Orange Volunteer Fire Department has mailed raffle ticket booklets to every home in town  a couple of months before the  annual Carnival.

The event which serves as the department’s major fundraiser, begins on July 31 and runs through Aug. 3

The reason you haven’t received your tickets yet is (in short) because the Postal Service said “no.” Something about regulations.

The direct mail tickets were a main source of revenue over the years and the fire department is worried that ticket sales will be low because of the Postal Service’s decision.

Firefighters Rich Williamson (shown) Klevis Kimca and Mark Osinski sold raffle tickets at this week's summer concert on at Orange Fairgrounds.

“We sent out a letter last month explaining this to residents,” said Fire Chief John Knight. “We’ve set up several locations for people to pick up tickets, and hope they’ll come out and buy them.”

IMG_4782Members of the Orange Volunteer Fire Department (and the Orange Community Emergency Response Team — CERT) took part in a storm preparation day at Home Depot on Saturday.

Both groups spent about 3 hours talking to the public: Firefighters showed off the Rescue 1 truck and explained  its functions, while CERT provided information and brochures.

The UI and other groups also set up tables and shared information.

Meanwhile over at the Christmas Tree Shop, firefighters greeted shoppers and sold raffle tickets for great prizes that will be on display at this week’s Volunteer Firemen’s Carnival.

For just $5 you can have a chance at winning one of the prizes and you will be helping the volunteer fire department raise money to purchase the training and equipment they need to serve the community.

Robert “Bob” Crocco

Robert Joseph Crocco, 54, lost his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease early morning on October 8th, 2012. Though he lost his battle with the disease, Bob was a fighter till the very end. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Diane Crocco, and their 3 children, Alexandra, Stefanie and Robert Jr.

Bob was born and raised in Orange, CT. He graduated from Amity Regional High School in 1976 and then, went on to graduate from Fordham University in 1980, with a Bachelor’s Degree in communications. He worked for the US Postal Service for 27 years, where he was promoted to Post Master of Guilford, but never had the opportunity to take on the position due to his illness.

He was known throughout his native town as a charismatic and outgoing guy. He worked hard as the town’s special events committee chairman for five years and brought the annual Summer Concerts to Orange. He was also a prominent figure of the Stew Leonard’s for Orange campaign.

Bob had many hobbies, including gardening, singing oldies karaoke, watching the Yankees and most of all, cruising. Bob was a proud Carnival Cruise VIP and loved going on vacation with his family. He wanted to be a cruise director for Carnival Cruise Lines after his retirement from the Post Office and hoped to take a cruise to Alaska and to Europe once all of the kids were out of the house.

Bob is also survived by his father John Crocco and siblings: Cynthia Spector of Branford, John Crocco Jr. (Cynthia), Andrea Duarte, and his niece Ariana Duarte, as well as, many other nieces and nephews on his wife’s side.
