Keeping with tradition, the UConn baseball team concluded their fall workouts atop Cemetery Hill, at the graves of university founders, Charles, and Augustus Storrs. Head coach Jim Penders then announced the team’s 2019 captains, as voted on by the team. Mason Feole, John Toppa and Chris Winkel will captain the team for the 2019 season.
Winkel garners captain status after a breakout sophomore season in Storrs. The versatile first basemen played in 59 games with 55 starts and registered 986 fielding percentage. The Orange native set career-highs by hitting .264 with 53 hits, 22 runs scored, 11 doubles, four home runs, and 33 RBIs.
He is the son of James and Marcy Winkel and has one brother, Patrick, who joined him at UConn this year.
