There used to be several favorite donut shops in the area, especially in the city of Milford: Bess Eaton, Dunkin’ Donuts, and after a lot of hype Krispy Kreme even opened a shop in Milford close to the Mall.Bess Eaton closed decades ago, and Krispy Kreme didn’t even last 20 years. You can find the pre-packaged glazed sweets at Walmart and there are shops in Uncasville, CT near Mohegan Sun. Besides that, they’re pretty much a fading memory.
So, aside from grocery store bakeries that really stepped up to fill the void, the only tried and true donut shop around the area is Dunkin’.
Well, get ready Orange, an established donut shop is ready to challenge Dunkin with its first Connecticut location right on the Boston Post Road. There are 130 Duck Donuts shops throughout the US and Canada.
What’s with the name? As Wednesday Addams would ask, “Are they made from real ducks?” No, the shop is simply named from the town from which it hails. It all began on the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks in Duck, North Carolina in 2006.
What makes Duck Donuts different?According to their website: At Duck Donuts, we’re all about warm, delicious and made-to-order donuts. We believe that each ring should be made fresh when you walk through the door. We believe that coatings should be dipped, drizzled and topped just the way you like them, every time. We believe in choices.
They have a Mascot: While Dunkin’ doesn’t seem to have a mascot – unless you consider Ben Affleck a mascot and not just a spokesman – Duck Donuts does have a mascot named Ollie the duck.
The donut chain will occupy the former Smoothie King space at 350 Boston Post Road, which will be renovated into a full-service donut shop, but the existing drive-thru window is not included in the plans.
