Today, at 1:30 p.m., Wright Excavating returned to the Orange town green where 50 years ago it buried the Time Capsule that would be opened for the town’s Bicentennial Celebration in 2022.
The crew, along with members of the Bicentennial Committee waited patiently as a deep hole was dug down to and around the bright orange burial vault/time capsule and everyone seemed delighted to see that the ground underneath the box was bone dry — perhaps the inside of the capsule would be too.
The precious cargo was transported to a secret location where the lid was carefully chiseled loose and the cover lifted and removed.
Everyone gathered around, anxious and excited. What would they find? Would the treasures inside be preserved or destroyed?
I stood by as every piece of material was removed from the box and set aside on a table. But I gave my word that I wouldn’t reveal anything about what was found.
I’ve always stood by the saying, “Just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.” I’ve carried that little gem with me since the beginning of my print newspaper days 25 years ago. One of the reasons I am trusted by Police Departments and many people in positions of power.
As soon as the top came off, I put my camera down, as promised. Are you wondering what’s inside the Time Capsule? Do you want to see if YOUR contribution survived the last 50 years underground? Come to the Orange Country Fair and visit the Bicentennial display. Take a walk down memory lane. Relive the excitement in your classroom when your teacher told you that you would be able to participate in this very important historic event.
