The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on Friday that a surveying project requiring barrel closures (The DOT refers to each tunnel as barrels) will be performed on Route 15 Wilbur Cross Parkway northbound and southbound on the Heroes Tunnel (formerly West Rock Tunnel) in New Haven and Woodbridge.
The northbound barrel will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31 and Thursday, August 2, with traffic routed through the southbound barrel. The southbound barrel will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, and Thursday, August 9, with traffic routed through the northbound barrel.
Traffic control personnel and signing patterns will be used to guide drivers through the work zone. Please drive slowly and carefully and keep everyone safe.
The survey work is being completed in advance of project 167-108, to support the process of exploring various alternatives to rehabilitate or replace the tunnel as required under the National Environmental Policy Act and Connecticut Environmental Policy Act.
For more information visit the DOTs Heroes Tunnel Project website.
Be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.
The rehabilitation option could take up to 11 years and cost a quarter-billion dollars. It would include building a 50-foot wide construction bypass tunnel on the east side that would have two lanes, a shoulder, and escape walks.
