On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Town of Orange and the American Legion hosted a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veteran’s Walk in front of High Plains Community Center at 11 a.m.
On 11/11, 1918 at 11 a.m. the last shot of the “war to end all wars,” was fired and the world celebrated the end of the conflict.
A smaller than usual crowd gathered in the chilly fall air for the brief event which honors all veterans, both living and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on this the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France.
Honor Guards from the Orange Police Department and American Legion Post 127, along with members of the Rotary Club of Orange and Boy Scouts participated.
Each year, there are fewer WW1 survivors, perhaps a handful of these centenarians remain. Even the number of WWII survivors is dwindling. These men and women are truly a treasure and if you are lucky enough to meet one of them, make sure to thank them for their service.
Many of our local veterans were recognized at the Orange and regional schools during special assemblies last week.
