The Annual New Year’s Day Chilly Chili Run attracted a much smaller crowd to Orange on Monday morning, New Year’s Day, most likely due to the single digit temperature. A total of 379 registered and 288 finished the race. (In 2017, 508 registered and 479 finished).
Runners braved the 7-degree chill, and did their best to compete in the race, which supports the Amity Teen Center.
Wearing bib #1, the overall winner was Calvin Park, 22, of Trumbull, who finished the race 16:23.
This is Park’s fourth first-place victory in this race. In 2014, at the age of 18, he ran it in 16:43.36.
Orange resident Anthony Tom, 16, came in second at 17:38, followed by 23-year-old Orange resident, Dan McCabe at 18:13.
The first female finisher was Maliya Ellis, 16, at 20:39 followed by Betsy Overstrum, 15, at 20:59, and in third place, last year’s first-place female winner Bianca Lucero, 40, of New York at 21:08.
The oldest male runner in the race once again, was Herman Bershtein, 92, of Hamden, who crossed the finish line at 1:00:59, improving his 2017 finish time by 13 seconds!
And once again, the oldest female runner was Betty Holroyd, 91, of Wallingford, who finished at 59:26.
Bless each and every one of you, you have my complete and undying admiration for braving the cold today and finishing this race.
