In Memoriam: Professor Srilekha Bell, 86, Emeritus Professor and Mentor

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Srilekha Bell, a distinguished scholar of English literature, who passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at the age of 86.

A revered academic, gifted writer, and compassionate teacher, Professor Bell left an indelible mark on generations of students and colleagues alike.

Born in 1938 in British India, Srilekha Bell dedicated her life to the study and teaching of literature.

She earned her doctorate in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and went on to teach at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, most notably serving as Professor of English, where she taught for more than three decades.

Her interest, particularly in postcolonial literature, feminist theory, and 19th-century British fiction, was most evident. She was known not only for her intellectual rigour but also for justice in this divided world. Beyond her intellectual rigour, it was in the classroom that Professor Bell truly shone. Her lectures were dynamic, her standards exacting, and her mentorship unwavering.

Students remember her not just as a brilliant mind, but as someone who listened deeply, challenged kindly, and encouraged tirelessly. She nurtured countless academic and creative careers, always urging her students to write and think with clarity, conviction, and conscience.

Outside academia, Srilekha was an avid reader, collector, gardener, and lover of art and classical music. Her laughter, kindness, warmth, and subtle wit enriched the lives of all who knew her.

She is survived by her son [Neil], sister [Indrani], brother [Sumit], two grandchildren [Kai & Livia], several cousins, nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of former students, colleagues, and friends who mourn her loss and celebrate her legacy.

A memorial service will be held at [418 Dogburn Lane, Orange] on Sunday, June 22, 2025, open to all who wish to honour her memory.

Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity, scholarship fund, or institution supporting young women in literary studies—an enduring testament to Professor Bell’s life and values.

May she rest in peace.
